Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL):
Pathophysiology
What is pathophysiology? It is the process that leads to the
disease or injury.
ALL is a
cancer that originated in the bone marrow, when white blood cells replicate out
of control. These immature white blood
cells take the space of mature cells.
Below is an
image from my first blog post, but it is a perfect image to walk through in
order to explain this disease process.
First, we
have the blood stem cells that originate in the bone marrow. It is here that the cells divide into myeloid
cells or lymphoid cells. Myeloid cells
further divide into red blood cells, platelets, and white blood cells. The lymphoid stem cells further divide to
different lymphocytes. It is the
lymphoblast cells that begin to replicate out of control taking the place of
health mature cells. These immature
cells are not able to function normally or fight infection for the body.
This image
shows what the difference between a health patients blood vs. a patient with
ALL. This is am image at the microscopic
level. As you can see the leukemia slide
contains much more monocytes, lymphocytes, and neutrophils- all of these coming
being a subtype of white blood cells.
Here is a great video summarizing this weeks post!
